Guano is our final University project. It was made over the course of 2 semesters with a total team of about 25 students. The goal of the project was to make a game from start to finish: starting at the ideation stage and ending with the release of the game on Steam, to simulate and experience a studio setting and the entire pipeline of a game release.
I occupied many roles on the team, including Level Design, Marketing, and Technical Design. For more details on my Technical Design contribution, check out the Voxel Plugin page of this website
First Role: Level Designer
Guano was a very ambitious project: It is a navigation and exploration game in an open world with a flying character controller that obeyed to the laws of physics. This means that the Level Design on this project was a huge challenge for me and the rest of the Level Design Team. Each section of the map was thought of to be both fun to explore, and be able to host a different type of quest.
THE LEVEL DESIGN TEAM:
- Cédric Laroche, Creative Director
- Guillaume Massé, Lead
- David Céré
- Mathieu Gaudreau
- Roman Cros
Stilt Shores & First Buoy Quest
- Created an Island offshore with Stilts and tunnels that the player can fly through
- Reward the player for exploring the area through interactible events and collectibles.
- Created a buoy parkour quest that uses the stilts and tunnels as obstacles
- The quest introduces the purpose of buoys and shows the player what each the two colored buoys does
Canyons & Second Buoy Path Quest
Made in collaboration with Guillaume Massé
- Upgraded the Waterfall Area to add more verticality and make the flight more fun in that area.
- Reward the player for exploring the area through interactible events and collectibles.
- Used rock formations, tunnels and the environnement to create a fun parkour with buoys
- Introduced a new type of Bouncy Buoy to teach the player how they work.
